Fev heads Rams win
Former AFL star Brendan Fevola graced the turf at Anniversary Park last week and grabbed a 10-goal haul as Rockingham Rams downed bitter rivals Waroona by 44 points.
Fevola had an indifferent start to the game, botching two early set shots, but recovered strongly and kicked six majors in an inspired third quarter display.
He turned the clock back and delighted the 3000-strong crowd with a fine solo effort, the dual Coleman medallist turning expertly and punting a major from 40 metres just beside the boundary line.
“There was a great crowd, it was good to put on a good show, kick some good goals and take a few grabs,” Fevola told the Telegraph.
“I was just getting used to the footy, it sounds like a piece of plastic when you kick it, so once I got it kicked in I started to kick pretty well.
“We didn’t start too well and after half-time I thought I had better pull my finger out and start trying a little bit.”
The former Carlton and Brisbane spearhead, who kicked more than 600 goals in a colourful AFL career, had nothing but praise for his teammates and the Rockingham club.
“It was a great win, obviously Rockingham have had a pretty bad record against this mob in the past couple of years,” he said.
“It was good for the boys, they’re a good bunch of players, they’re a great group and really well-coached.
“The other team started to drop their heads a little bit towards the second half of the third quarter and the boys really capitalised.”
Fevola also paid tribute to the big crowd which flocked to watch the game.
“It’s always good to get some supporters down to country footy, that’s the whole idea behind playing these games,” he said.
“You see all the young kids out here, it’s a very family-orientated scenario, and hopefully the parents of the kids can walk away and be happy with what we all brought to the club today.”
