Inclusion, participation and communication were the key messages on Friday as the Rockingham community turned out in great numbers to celebrate those living with disabilities.

The City of Rockingham’s Celebrate Ability event was held at the Gary Holland Centre in partnership with local social organisations, volunteers and schools in the district.

An array of activities and live entertainment was available for all those who attended, with the community rallying around the event.

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said it was the sixth year the City had hosted the day.

“We are all here today to celebrate ability and it is great to see all the support — the event is growing each year and only getting better and better,” he said.

“Today we celebrate the contributions of people with a disability, but we also want to raise awareness as well.

“At the City we think it’s important that we have an inclusive community.

“Today is about participation. It’s also about communicating, reconnecting with old friends and making new friendships — so let’s celebrate ability.”

Mr Sammels also thanked all the volunteers and people who made the event a success.
