Firefighters visit students
One month on from the devastating fire which ripped through East Waikiki Primary School, students from rooms 7 and 8 were treated with a visit from the Baldivis Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Following the fire, which caused damage to two classrooms and destroyed students’ artwork, teacher Mandy Jones said the visit was organised by a pupil’s father, Jaimie McNair, who is a volunteer firefighter.
“It’s really good for the kids to learn about fire safety and it can be healing for them too,” she said.
Miss Jones, who lost teaching resources to the blaze, said she was overwhelmed by the incredible generosity the school had received. “We were sent a care package from Mount Lawley Primary School, who also had a fire, with beautiful letters of support from the students,” she said.
Mr McNair said the visit last Wednesday was to teach students about fire safety so they knew what to do in a fire emergency.
“Fire safety is knowledge that kids should have and we are here to teach them what to do if they were to catch on fire, if they see a fire, to stop, drop and roll and good fire versus bad fire,” he said.
Student Mia Hendy, 6, said she liked seeing the hose being squirted and hearing the sirens and classmate Justin McNair, 6, said he liked wearing the helmet and exploring the fire truck.
