Football: Dockers just too good

Sound Telegraph

The Secret Harbour Dockers faced Yanchep at the weekend in a finals makeor- break game, with both sides vying for second spot on the ladder.

The Dockers were just too good on the day and, after relentless pressure, ran out comfortable winners 15.10 (100) to 10. 5 (65).

Even though Yanchep kicked the first goal of the game, Secret Harbour soon found their rhythm and by quarter time were up by a couple of goals.

With three potent forwards, the Dockers caused Yanchep headaches and they were forced to put a couple of their better forwards down the back, which proved a pivotal.

Coach Mark Pink restructured his own defence to suit and the team then squeezed the life out of Yanchep’s forward thrusts.

Ryan Casson and Jake Ferrier took their many opportunities and by half time the Dockers had extended their lead to 30 points.

Al McDonald had a big impact, as did Dean Hunter, Jared Ismail, Ryan Stewart and Daryl Beechey in midfield.

Lockie Dickman had a fine game at fullback in his best season for some time, and with his newfound form has entrenched himself as one of the key defenders in the competition.

The third quarter saw the Dockers extend their lead out to eight goals, but Yanchep scored a couple of late goals to give them some hope running into the last quarter.

But the consistent pace and pressure from the Dockers saw them run out winners.

Pink even had the luxury of resting a couple of quality players late in the game.

The colts also rattled off their 13th win of the season and in doing so will also play finals football.

The young Dockers faced Safety Bay Stingers and set the game up in the first quarter by kicking four goals to none.

They eventually ran out winners 12.7 (79) to 4.7 (31).

The game never really reached any great heights, but three red cards for Safety Bay in about five minutes didn’t help their chances of upsetting the polished Secret Harbour team.

Best players for Secret Harbour were Jake Springs with five goals, Wade Pascoe, Jared Ismail, captain Jordan Russell and Jesse Ironmonger.

The colts will now play their first final this Saturday at 10.45, while the seniors will play their second semi on Sunday, August 28 at 3pm at Medina Oval.
