Football greats to speak

He scored 46 goals for Scottish premier league side Rangers and went on to coach the Perth Glory — now legendary former professional soccer player Ian Ferguson is set to appear in Rockingham.

The footballer, who played a part in every season of the Rangers’ historic nine run of nine titles in a row, will descend on Lark Hill Sportsplex on Saturday to answer questions from club members.

Long-time Rockingham Football Club member Robert Crerar said members would have the chance to chat with the legendary player, as well as former Everton and England player Gary Stevens, as part of a special fundraiser for the club.

“Local football fans will have the opportunity to speak directly to Ian and Gary, and they will hang about afterwards for a bit of a chat,” he said.

“We’ve got a brilliant club here, and would love to see football fans come down and meet these two very well respected players.”

Crerar said the club, which relocated from Dowling Street to the sportsplex more than four years ago, schooled hundreds of youngsters in soccer skills and was proud of its semi-professional first team.

“My son Robert has been a member of the club for more than 20 years and it would be great to see local players come down and tryout for the first team,” he said.
