Football: Wedding bells ring in a worry

JACK CRAWSHAWSound Telegraph

The Rockingham Rams got their preparation right for amouth-watering encounter against Halls Head Lightning at the weekend, defeating them by 94 points, 19.20 (134) to 6.4 (40).

But the great start for the ladder leaders could be undone next week, with the side set to be decimated by a clubman’s wedding ceremony.

Rockingham struggled to break the game open early, as Halls Head stuck to their game plan and kept the Rams on their toes.

The Rams welcomed back former South Fremantle player Nic Gronenburg, who kicked four goals, while goalsneak Michael Coy added three to his 2011 tally.

The margin was only 30 points at half-time, and much of the third quarter played out in similar fashion to the first half, as Halls Head were able to keep in touch.

But Rockingham managed to find the goals towards the end of the quarter to take a 51-point lead into the final stanza.

Rockingham had saved their best for last as they piled on seven unanswered goals to blow the final margin out to 94 points.

Player of the match with a consistent four quarters was Chris Reeves, who worked hard and is an underrated player in a star-studded line-up.

But concern for Rockingham going into next week’s top-of-the-table clash is their inaccurate kicking.

They had 39 scoring shots at goal, but only converted 19 into majors.

Injuries will also be an concern for the Rams, who were already missing hardman Peter McGennisken, with Dale Roberts now set to miss upto three weeks of footy with a calf injury.

And with half the team expected at a club mate’s wedding next Sunday, the door could be left open for the Waroona Demons.
