Friends seek tree volunteers
It will be all hands on deck this weekend when Friends of Point Peron members plant native trees in the bushland area of the coastal parkland.
Group convenor James Mumme said members hoped to plant about 1000 trees over Saturday and Sunday, as part of an ongoing mission to improve the area’s natural beauty.
With National Tree Day onJuly 28, Mr Mumme said hundreds of local native trees, including wattles and tuart pines, would be carefully placed in designated areas where they can grow and thrive.
“All of the new trees come from Rockingham’s Men of the Trees nursery,” he said.
“We have been planting new trees in the bushland around Point Peron for about eight years now and hope to get the community involved this weekend.”
Mr Mumme said local secondary school and university students had taken part in similar events of late.
“It’s tough out here if you’re a tree, we need to make sure that the new trees are placed in an indentation in the ground to ensure they get enough water, and somewhere where they get enough shade,” he said.
“It’s a great thing for kids and other members of the community to come out and take part — in years to come they will be able to say ‘hey, I planted that’.”
The community is invited to meet Mr Mumme and his team of volunteers at Lease Road, Point Peron, between 10am and 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
