Getting the good oil from former Oil Garrett

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

It is not everyday you get to sit down with the former front man of Midnight Oil and talk to him about what’s going on in his life.

Usually answering questions relating to his Federal parliamentary portfolios, School Education, Early Childhood and Youth Minister Peter Garrett was not asked one political question by The Coffee Club employee Bec Thompson when the pair chatted at the coffee store last week.

“I don’t realty follow politics,” she said. “I talked to him about the last gig that he did and told him about all my dreams.”

Ms Thompson, 20, said one of her colleagues was jumping up and down when she saw Mr Garrett in the centre.

“He’s definitely the most famous person we’ve had in,” she said.

“But we’ve only been open for four weeks so he hasn’t had much competition.”

Mr Garrett said he was happy to talk to people about whatever topic they wanted to discuss.

“It’s always fun and I really enjoy meeting people and it’s a part of the job that I happen to think is pretty cool,” he said.

“I’m happy to talk about Midnight Oil, I’m happy to talk about the surf, I’m happy to talk about politics, whatever people want to yarn about.”
