Gift helps kit out 40 cadets

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

There was reason to celebrate at Point Peron’s Training Ship Anzac last week when cadets received a welcome cash boost which will help take them to Sydney in October.

The 40 young people will attend the Royal Australian Navy’s 100th annual fleet review, an international event which brings together more than 50 international navies and their warships.

TS Anzac executive officer Ian Fryer said club president Robert Gilmore’s $1250 donation, courtesy of Rockingham Returned and Services League Club, would help buy new uniforms for the group.

“The (new uniforms) will enable the cadets to attend the 100th annual fleet review and proudly represent Rockingham at this international event,” he said.

Mr Fryer said about 300 Australian cadets would attend the event at Sydney’s Circular Quay from October 3 to 11 as part of ancient naval tradition.

The first Royal Fleet Review was recorded in 1415 when Henry V reviewed his ships prior to sailing to France.

Since then, the Royal Navy has held 46 fleet reviews, the most recent in 2005 to commemorate the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The week-long event will commemorate 100 years since Royal Australian Navy’s fleet into Sydney on October 4, 1913.
