Girls work in industry

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

A group of teen girls from across the Rockingham area have hailed Kwinana Industries Council’s iWomen project a success.

The 23 girls, who are in Year 10 at 10 schools, took part in a program of activities and excursions designed to make them aware of the different career opportunities available for women in industry.

The program came to a close last Tuesday with a special presentation from the girls about their experiences in industry.

KIC workforce and education committee chairman Richard Collett said the iWomen project, now in its second year, was an excellent way to encourage young women, aspire to further studies and contemplate a career in areas they may not have considered previously.

“KIC is keen to see the development of women working within the Kwinana Industrial Area as role models, particularly in what may be considered non-traditional areas,” he said.

“The opportunity for students to meet with these women through a project like this is a great start to these young women’s path for choosing future career options.”

The students, from Rockingham and Hamilton senior high schools, Peter Carnley Anglican Community School, and Comet Bay, Gilmore, Kolbe Catholic, South Coast Baptist, Tranby, Living Waters Lutheran and The King’s colleges, visited CSBP and Fremantle Ports to meet employees and had the opportunity to reflect on their possible future involvement with KIC.

Rhiannon Merrifield, 15, said the program was educational and she would encourage peers to get involved next year.
