Sound Telegraph

More than 100 golfers came to Rockingham Golf Club from across metropolitan and country clubs for the 2011 Glenway Rockingham Bowl, which this year was won by Royal Perth Golf Club player Cruze Strange.

The annual competition is a 36-hole stroke event played over two days and results count for points in the Paxton Shield, which is awarded annually to the best amateur golfer in WA.

Despite the fine weather for the first round, the course had everyone struggling to score well.

At the end of the first day, there were three equal leaders scoring 71 — Ray Chow (Gosnells), Daniel Hoeve (Kwinana) and Strange.

Best first-round scores for Rockingham players were David Hill (72) and Darren Murray (73).

The second day was overcast with an unusual wind from the west that completely changed the complexion of the course.

The three leading players teed off together in what proved to be an absorbing tussle.

At different times during the round, each player led the competition.

Scoring proved difficult at times and the championship was in doubt until the final green.

Ultimately, Strange, runner-up in this event last year, proved to be the steadiest and claimed the championship with a second-round score of 73 for a two-round total of 144.

Chow and Hoeve each had second-round scores of 75 for two round totals of 146.

The best-placed Rockingham players after 36 holes were Harley Snelson in equal fourth place (150) Sean Wanless in sixth place (152) and David Hill in equal seventh place (153).
