Goodbye, Kwinana Hub

Kwinana residents held a special farewell party to thank the traders at their local shopping centre, some of whom have shut their doors for good.

Members of the community turned out on Saturday to show solidarity with those who have run shops in the Hub, scheduled for a major refurbishment, over the past 39 years.

The shopping centre was put down for a major overhaul after Woolworths took over last year, controversially placing many leaseholders on month-by-month contracts.

Despite traders knowing for months that the complex was due for a refit, the decision taken to give them one month’s notice to leave left many shopkeepers and customers reeling.

However, lastweekWoolworths granted some traders an extension, including two chemists, to give them more time to organise other premises.

The complex now lies half-empty, with some units completely bare while others around them are still trading.

Rob and PatVos have operated the Hub Nutrition Centre for 30 years and had mixed feelings about the closure.

‘‘We have not decided on the future,’’ Mrs Vos said.

Janet Davidson from Pets Tucker was clearing out the family-owned and managed store after five years of operation, while Susan Catchpole from Beauty Workshop was leaving the Hub after nine years.

Both women are relocating to other suburbs in Kwinana.

Members of the Medina Residents Group and Kwinana Heritage Group put together a collection of photographs which documented some of the early shopkeepers and local events that have been hosted at the Hub over the years, which was on display at the event.

In 1972 local resident Peter Perrin won the competition to name the shopping centre the Hub.

There was a sombre mood at the farewell event, even with entertainment and food being provided.

‘‘The Hub is more than just a collection of shops,’’ one resident said.

‘‘The centre has been a pivotal feature of our community for many years and provides a place for people to catch up, have a cuppa and go about their business.

The Hub is what helps to maintain Kwinana’s village feel and keeps our community connected.’’
