Advising on Rockingham headspace's strategic direction and how it can meet the needs of young people in the region has earned its Youth Reference Group a place in the finals of Mental Health Good Outcomes Awards.

Youth Reference Group member Glen Hatwell said he had been involved with headspace since before it opened last year because he wanted to make a difference to the way young people sought help for mental health issues, having type-one bi-polar himself.

"I have a lived experience with mental illness, I did not graduate high school because I became very unwell and was hospitalised, but when I got out I didn't have much direction," he said.

"I haven't used the service, but the level of support, making friends, being out in the community and get training through headspace has made me feel I can take on bigger things.

"It's got me to where I am now."

He said he was proud of the work the YRG had been able to achieve including the Pride march, driving awareness of mental health and removing the stigma of seeking help and gambling, all while working or studying.

"It's a good feeling to be recognised for all the stuff we have been doing and it would great if more people wanted to get involved," he said.

YRG facilitator and headspace community worker Kirstin Janes nominated the group for the Equal Opportunity Commission Award for human rights, equity and diversity in mental health because she was proud of their achievements, going beyond expectations.

The winners will be announced on October 6.
