Help spread Christmas cheer

Emily SharpSound Telegraph

The Salvation Army in Kwinana is asking the community to donate goods to help them spread hope to those who need it most this Christmas.

Kwinana Salvation Army Captains Erica and Peter Jones said the need was only growing.

“We’ve been doing this for 10 years and this is going to be our busiest Christmas yet — it already is,” Mrs Jones said.

“The donation of pantry goods is so important so that we can put together care packages — the more of that we have, the more people we can help.”

The Kwinana branch is in need of cereal, muesli bars, noodles, tinned fruits and vegetables, long-life milk and toys.

“Every little bit helps and don’t think that someone else has got it covered,” Mrs Jones said.

“One can of food can make a difference — it is all needed and it all helps.

“The face of poverty is changing, it’s now the families that have never needed help before that are struggling.

“There is no judgment or discrimination — if you are in need, please come and see us.”

The Kwinana Salvation Army offers a range of services to the community including a drop-in centre, counselling, community garden, men’s shed, under-5s music program, craft groups, a youth group and church services.

“The whole point of these programs is for a seamless transition; there is something here for all members of the family,” Mr Jones said. “We are the face of hope and joy and hopefully in those times we can be the smiling face to say that it’s going to be all right.”
