Hillman Primary School green thumbs did their bit for the envi- ronment last week when they plan- ted more than 700 trees at Rock- ingham Regional Park in Cooloongup.

Science and environment teacher Tracy Hill said 60 Year 5 students spent the morning planting native tree seedlings in the vicinity of Lake Cooloongup.

Miss Hill said the children had been looking forward to the field trip, which expanded on in-class learning about conservation and wetland ecosystems.

"I think residents must have heard us walking down all the way from Hillman - the children were so excited," she said.

"It's been a really worthwhile trip in terms of their understanding of conservation."

Rockingham Men of the Trees secretary Cedric Bakewell, who assisted in preparing seedlings for the students, said the day represented the first of many planting days planned for students within the community.

A Department of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said the students planted hundreds of seedlings to help out with the department's revegetation project.

She said the large-scale tree planting helped the students learn about the values of Rockingham Regional Park.
