Indigenous culture celebrated

SOPHIE HAWKINSSound Telegraph

Medina Primary School celebrated NAIDOC Week on August 17 in a day which saw the students get out of the classroom and get stuck activities which celebrate indigenous culture.

Kicking off first thing in the morning the school hosted a community breakfast where parents were invited along to share in a breakfast with students and teachers.

The students then enjoyed a traditional dance performance and spent the rest of the day participating in activities like damper making, didgeridoo and boomerang painting and they got a special reptile lesson about reptiles in the area.

For lunch, the whole school as well as the teachers enjoyed a big sausage sizzle.

Medina Primary School science teacher Jenny Bignell supported the staff that put the day together and said it was an important day on the school’s calendar.

‘‘The students love it’’ she said.

‘‘Forty-five per cent of our students are indigenous so it’s important we explore NAIDOC week and Aboriginal culture.

‘‘We have non-indigenous kids calling themselves indigenous because it’s considered pretty cool to be indigenous here.’’
