Inspiring Adam rises to challenge
In a bid to fulfil a dream of umpiring the grand final at Country Week football, Secret Harbour man Adam Hauswirth lost more than 50kg.
The 35-year-old said his transformation started three years ago when he accepted his alarming weight of 140kg.
Mr Hauswirth was tired of seeing an unhealthy version of himself.
“I started going to the gym regularly and changed my diet, although I still have a day every week where I enjoy a favourite meal,” he said.
“Chocolate, hot chips and bread were my biggest vices.”
Mr Hauswirth said the 46kg he lost started to pile back on again when he injured himself umpiring football last year.
“Initially, I couldn’t go to the gym and then Christmas happened and I put on about 16kg,” he said.
The weight gain pushed Mr Hauswirth to sign up to a boot camp in January and within 12 weeks he had lost 22kg.
“Boot camp is hard but it gets easier,” he said.
“It’s all about dedication and self motivation. You only get out what you put in.”
“Mr Hauswirth said what was once a struggle to exercise was now an addiction.
“I exercise six days a week, three of them about three hours a day, sometimes split between morning and evening sessions,” he said.
“Mostly, it is to maintain fitness for footy, but when you’re in the mindset you just love doing it.
“I’m happier now and have a lot more confidence.”
Mr Hauswirth said the bonus with boot camp was keeping track of time scores.
He said one of the biggest challenges was the 100 club test, in which participants must do 100 burpies, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, 100 push-ups and running.
“Initially, it took me 23 minutes to complete, but now I’ve got it down to 15 minutes,” Mr Hauswirth said.
“I’ve made massive improvements and people have noticed. Everyone can’t believe how much weight I’ve lost,” he said.
“I’ve haven’t been this size since I was 16.”
He said he now weighed 93kg and wanted to lose a couple more kilograms, but mostly wanted to continue getting fitter in time for umpiring in July. Mr Hauswirth said he wanted to be the best umpire at this year’s Country Week football championships.
He said the WA Football League coaches would select the top 12 umpires from preliminary games to feature in the grand final.
Last year, Mr Hauswirth made it to the top three.
However, this year he wants to be number one and travel as part of the State team to the interstate competition.
Mr Hauswirth thanked his team of personal trainers for their continued task-master attitude, which helped him get to where he is now.
