Internships focus on area

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

It was after completing an internship at marine tourism business Mandurah Cruises that Murdoch University student Carl LaMacchia began to seriously consider a career in the industry.

The 20-year-old was one of a group of students from the university’s Rockingham Campus who took part in the Work Integrated Learning program.

Now in its second year, the project aims at encouraging local students to develop careers within local industry, Rockingham and Peel project officer Peter French said.

Mr French said students were encouraged to take part in the optional initiative which, it was hoped, would encourage graduates to remain within the area rather than seek work elsewhere.

He said the program was about creating opportunities for current students, and strengthening links with the business community.

“Students were given the opportunity to take part in a three-month internship, which included 30 days hands-on experience, as well as an academic component,” he said. “Two students were placed in Mandurah and I believe they may be hired by their respective companies.

“The Work Integrated Learning program aims to promote growth within the local business sector.”

Part of his studies in events management, Mr LaMacchia said his experience at Mandurah Cruises had opened his eyes to the different career paths available to him when he graduates next year.

He said he felt fortunate to be given the opportunity to spend time at the well-established Mandurah tourism business, and had learned a lot about the industry.

“I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work at Mandurah Cruises — it’s been really good fun,” he said.

“Over the 12 weeks, I’ve done a bit of everything, from office work, to working on the boats.

“It’s really made me look towards marine tourism as a serious career option for the future.”

Mandurah Cruises owner Rod Bishop said Mr LaMacchia had made a significant contribution to the business.
