Keen anglers get rods and reels ready for The Big One

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

More than 50 boats will take to the waters off Point Peron this weekend for Mangles Bay Fishing Club’s biggest competition of the year.

The Big One promises to be an action-packed day as hundreds of club members battle it out in a bid to take home a share of more than $18,000 in prizes.

Weighmaster Nigel Kitchen said prizes such as cash, fishing gear and vouchers were all up for grabs, thanks to donations from local businesses, with $4000 offered for the heaviest fish.

Mr Kitchen said competitors would set off at dawn on Saturday, spending the day on the water before returning at 3pm, with the official weigh-in kicking off at 3.30pm.

He said each fisher could win just one prize, in categories including biggest dhufish, biggest snapper, biggest herring, biggest squid, biggest tuna, biggest flathead and many more.

“To keep it fair, each competitor can only take one prize — if someone has already won, the prize goes to the next biggest fish,” he said.

“It will be a good day with a bit of a laugh and a joke while out on the water and entertainment after the weigh-in.”
