Kitesurfing: Champion takes to the waves

Sound Telegraph

Victoria's men's freestyle kitesurfing champion Ewan Jaspan hit the waters of Safety Bay last week as part of a three-week training trip to WA.

The Melbourne-based 17-year-old was spotted landing somebig moves at the popular spot renowned for kite and windsurfing.

‘‘It has flat water and consistent wind every afternoon,’’ Jaspan said.

He said Safety Bay and Woodman’s Point were the two best spots to kitesurf in WA and he had travelled from the Eastern States to take advantage of the good weather.

‘‘Melbourne is having a bit of an off season — the whole east coast’s weather has been off because of the floods — there’s no wind,’’ he said.

Jaspan said he was preparing for the 2011 Australian men’s titles, in which he placed third last February.

He took out ninth place in the Australian World Tour.

Jaspan said Australia had a contract to be involved in the World Tour for the next five years and believed Safety Bay would be an ideal spot for a kitesurfing event.
