Kitten escapes flames

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

A three-month-old kitten was saved from harm last week, when a Rockingham woman rescued it from a group of boys who were attempting to set it alight.

The disturbing events unfolded as the woman was visiting Waikiki Beach on Tuesday of last week and spotted the teenage boys tossing the kitten around and then attempting to set fire to it with a blowtorch.

She managed to take the kitten from them and was shouted at and abused as the boys, who were believed to be in their early teens, took off.

A spokesman for rehoming specialist Cat Haven, where the kitten was later treated, said it was unfathomable how young people could treat a defenceless animal with such cruelty and deliberate malice.

“With thousands of cats and kittens coming through our doors every year, we see many cases of neglect and abuse, but this one shocked us all,” he said.

“Kiki, as staff named the kitten, did not suffer any injuries and has recovered well.”

“She is neither microchipped nor sterilised, but was wearing a tan-coloured collar embossed with black hearts, with a silver-coloured bell.”

He urged anyone who is missing the brindle kitten to contact Cat Haven, Shenton Park, so that she can be reunited with her family.

“We’re glad Kiki is safe and we hope she can return home soon or find a new home from our shelter, where she can be treated with all the love and dignity she deserves.”
