Knights in fine form
Kwinana Knights Football Club players have stepped inside the boxing ring and swapped their footy shorts for bathers as they try new training regimes in their quest to go one better in 2013.
Last year, the club lost the Metro Football League grand final to the Secret Harbour Dockers by 20 points.
Club president Bill Tregear said a wave of enthusiasm had swept through the club since Darren Taylor hung up his boots and taken the reins as senior coach for the forthcoming season.
A premiership player and former captain, Taylor has taken the next step in his coaching career after coaching the reserves team last year.
Taylor said he was excited about leading the senior team and had been impressed with what he had seen in the first month of pre-season training.
Tregear said the club was fortunate not to lose any players over the summer and the team had been established for a few years.
“We don’t have too much trouble retaining the players so that’s a good solid base,” he said.
The club has invested in new fitness equipment and a bus, which Tregear said would allow the team to travel together for away games.
He said the club was in a sound position off the field and the aim was to translate that into on-field success.
The club’s last premiership was in 2010 when the senior and reserves’ teams both took home the silverware.
Tregear, who is entering his fifth year as club president, said the club was focused on creating a positive environment for its players at all levels.
“We’re really focused on the young ones to make sure they’ve got a good environment to come to,” he said.
“We’re really setting up an environment for those young kids that Kwinana’s the choice place that they want to come (to) once they finish juniors.”
