Kwinana ire at live sheep plan
Kwinana Watchdog spokesman Steve Hesse is strongly opposed to a possible move of the live sheep trade to Kwinana.
Transport Minister Troy Buswell has raised the issue of live sheep exports from Kwinana during a meeting about the State Government’s plans for the Fremantle outer harbour to be located in Cockburn Sound.
According to Kwinana MLA Roger Cook, Mr Buswell said he was going to tell them all something even the Fremantle Ports representatives at the meeting did not know and then proceeded to outline the strong possibility of the live sheep trade shifting from Fremantle to Kwinana.
Mr Cook said Mr Buswell was enthusiastic about shifting the trade as that would get it away from his partner Adele Carles’ electorate and Premier Colin Barnett’s Cottesloe electorate.
But he remained opposed to the trade moving to the area even if it was to a disused jetty.
‘‘I’m pro-jobs so I want the sheep processed in WA,’’ Mr Cook said.
‘‘But if it’s going to continue it should stay in Fremantle where it’s always been in full view of everyone.’’
Both the Kwinana Town Council and community group Kwinana Watchdog said they were strongly opposed to the trade operating from a Kwinana port.
‘‘Our campaign against live exports has been an extensive one and as long as Kwinana remains an option for the future location of the live export trade we will continue to campaign against it, with the full support of our community,’’ Mayor Carol Adams said.
Kwinana Watchdog spokesman Steve Hesse said it was ‘‘typical of the Liberal Government to dump the trade on Kwinana’’.
