Liberals launch campaign

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

In an election campaign when the Federal purse has rarely been opened, the Liberals opened it up to the tune of $2 million to help fund a new Children’s Adventure Park at Kwinana.

Signalling it will stop at nothing to win the Labor-held seat for the first time, the Premier, Federal Opposition Leader and two Bishops all visited the Brand electorate last week.

On Sunday, Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop joined Brand Liberal candidate Donna Gordin in Kwinana to promise the park funding under a Coalition-elected Government.

Ms Gordin said the 5ha playground, to be built at Calista Oval, would be 2½ times the size of Subiaco Oval.

On Saturday, Tony Abbott addressed volunteers in Rockingham at a breakfast, his second visit to the electorate in as many months.

Earlier in the week, Liberal Party royalty was rolled out to officially launch its Brand campaign.

Shadow minister for seniors and special minister for State Bronwyn Bishop and Colin Barnett joined more than 200 party faithful at the Rockingham Navy Club last Wednesday.

Ms Bishop said while WA had strong representation by her party at a Federal level, she wanted to see the representation strengthened.

“Unless we see returned a government which has the interests of the people at the forefront of their mind, instead of the needs of themselves, then this country will not be governed well,” she said.

Ms Bishop said there were three things fundamental to see change and could only be delivered under an Abbott-led government.

She reaffirmed her party to abolish the carbon tax, return the budget to manageable proportions and stop “illegal boat people that arrive in this country”.
