Rockingham and Kwinana actors were on set in a Baldivis paddock last week for filming of an ABC documentary.

Picture: Cyril and Nathaniel Yarran with Karli Martin on the set of a documentary about Aboriginal warrior Yagan.

The indigenous actors are helping tell the story of Aboriginal warrior Yagan—a Noongar man who led indigenous resistance to early British settlement.

The story is told through the eyes of renowned Aboriginal actor Clarence Ryan.

Gregory Martin, who is a direct descendent of Yagan, has three children involved in the production.

‘‘It’s very special for our family to be involved in this documentary,’’ Mr Martin said.

‘‘Cyril, Nathaniel, Kerin, Karli and Biara are all descendants of Yagan and his family from the Swan River.

‘‘When the film crew first started looking for actors, one of the things they wanted was actors related to people of the Swan River.’’

Mr Martin said Yagan was one of a few people prepared to defend his land.

‘‘Most of the other stories or documents about Yagan paint a picture of an outlaw or a renegade,’’ he said.

‘‘But he was simply a very strong resistance fighter who was defending his land.

‘‘Even though it happened 190 years ago, the effects of settlement are still with us today through cause and effect.’’

The 55-minute film is yet to be named and will be televised next year.
