Love is 70 years strong

It was love at first sight for Waikiki great-grandfather Ted Properjohn when he first laid eyes on his bride-to-be Phyll Hooker in late 1943.

Both members of the Royal Australian Air Force, Mr Properjohn said he had flown during the war with Phyll's brother Eric.

He said the pair married on November 17, 1945, in a small New South Wales town before moving to Western Australia in 1946.

Nearly seven decades on and the couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this week.

Mrs Properjohn said she and Ted became parents to son Geoff and daughters Wendy and Vicki and were later joined by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She said her husband worked on the railways after he was discharged from the RAAF until he retired at 60 and they moved to Rockingham.

"I think the secret to a long marriage is always saying 'yes dear', but just doing what you want anyway," Mrs Properjohn said.

"We raised our kids well and we're home-loving people."

Mr Properjohn said the couple had always lived well, avoided smoking and drinking, and now, both in their 90s, enjoyed playing bowls and attending the Rockingham RSL and local Probus clubs.

He said he and his wife had also enjoyed learning to use computers. "There's not many of us left from the RAAF now - but we enjoy keeping busy," Mr Properjohn said.
