Mandurah councillor recognised with award
Years of dedication to improve the lives of Mandurah's less fortunate was recognised earlier this month when City councillor Lynn Rodgers received a Local Government Merit Award.
Cr Rodgers founded WestAus Crisis and Welfare Services in 1992 to help disadvantaged Peel residents.
The organisation helps more than 4000 people a year with advice, crisis accommodation, welfare payments and Christmas hampers.
Cr Rodgers said social inequality in Mandurah was huge.
"We started the Breakfast Club at Dudley Park Primary School and it is now at 16 schools throughout Peel, providing 115,000 breakfasts a year.
"I didn't want to think some kids were unable to get breakfast."
Having been on the council for almost 14 years, Cr Rodgers has helped give a voice to people in need and instigated the call for Foodbank to set up in Mandurah.
She said she was grateful for the City of Mandurah's nomination but embarrassed to have received it at this year's WA Local Government Convention.
"I do this work because I want to and it's great to be recognised for the work I do in the community," she said.
"Things in Mandurah have improved, there is easier access to help and a lot more City community services provided now."
