Marina submissions are being analysed

An appeals convenor is analysing submissions regarding the Environmental Protection Authority’s recommendation for conditional approval of the Mangles Bay Marina after the two-week appeal period closed on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Environment Minister Albert Jacob said the convenor would go through issues in each submission and prepare a report and recommendations for Mr Jacob.

It is not known how long the analysis of the appeals will take.

Hands off Point Person staged a last-ditch campaign against the development when more than 80 protests gathered out the front of development proponent Cedar Woods’ office in West Perth.

HOPP founder Dawn Jecks said last Wednesday’s protest signalled the start of their fight against the development.

A petition of 8000 signatures, outlining seven reasons why the Legislative Council should oppose the proposal for a marina at Mangles Bay, was also presented to Greens South Metropolitan MLC Lynn MacLaren.

“We’re not against a marina, let’s have one in a sensible location,” Ms Jecks said.

“We need to have a marina for Rockingham, but let’s have it in the sea.”

Meanwhile, the area has been tipped for a mini-development boom if plans for the marina development are given the official go-ahead.

David Evans Real Estate principal Kevin Brincat said he believed the proposed development would also increase house prices in neighbouring suburbs of Shoalwater and Safety Bay. “It will definitely drive up prices around the area,” he said.

“I lived and worked at Hillarys around the time they built the marina there and everyone wanted to live and work around it.

"I hope the Point Peron marina will have the same effect and bring new businesses to the area.”

“Development has been fairly slow in Rockingham but I think this project will change that,” he said.

“The Point Peron marina could help to give the Rockingham foreshore a facelift.”

“I think that is what Rockingham has been lacking — someone with a vision for the future of the city.”
