Students at Rockingham Montessori School have been given new musical instruments as part of their participation in the nationwide Musica Viva in Schools program.

After being treated to a live performance during Musica Viva’s visit earlier this month, students received a new guitar and ukulele to add to their collection.

Musica Viva WA manager Lindsay Lovering said the program had reached more than 180 schools in the State.

“This program is all about promoting the benefits of music education on academic studies and social wellbeing,” he said.

“Kids love the instruments and enjoy celebrating culture and dance through our live performances.”

Principal Vanessa Aikins said students took part in the interactive program every year.

“Our kids participate in both individual and whole-school music programs and new instruments are always welcome,” she said. “A group of our older students have expressed their interest in learning the ukulele, so I am certain it will be well used.”
