Mothers’ family favourites prove a recipe for success

Students and parents of Rockingham Montessori School licked their lips with delight when they sampled recipes set to feature in the school’s new cook book.

The school’s parent committee, Community Spirit, began planning the Rockingham Montessori Cook Book about six months ago to help parents with ideas for quick and easy lunches and dinners.

Principal Vanessa Aikins said involving the whole school community encouraged families to experiment in the kitchen.

“The book is about bringing our school community together, it is about healthy nutritious foods that families can share and can cook and prepare together,” she said.

“It is about bringing families together to be able to enjoy that time in the kitchen.”

Parent Veronica Galipo said the original idea stemmed from mothers wanting to create a snack book which then became a bumper publication featuring 76 family favourites.

“The book has everything from suggestions for snacks and lunch to dinners,” she said.

“It has recipes families use and have been passed down from grandmas or aunties or sisters.

“So basically simple, easy family recipes kids can help cook.”

Ms Aikins said parents and students gathered at the school on August 23 to celebrate the hard work that went into the cook book by sampling some of the recipes and taking some fun photos.

“Our school is very much about a sense of belonging, it’s about bringing harmony and peace into the school,” she said.

“Once children are comfortable and happy in their environment there is no stress and they are open to their learning and that is what we are promoting.”

The cook book will be available through the school by mid-October.
