Navy families get walking

GABRIELLE JEFFERYSound Telegraph

As a way to maintain the close-knit ties of navy personnel and their families, HMAS Stirling conducted its annual walk to work day, which included the Causeway Classic running race to Garden Island.

HMAS Stirling Commanding Officer Captain Brett Wolski said it encouraged fun and fitness.

‘‘Today is a day to share with our families and enjoy the environment and participate in a sporting activity,’’ he said.

‘‘This family fun day is an opportunity for us to say thank you to our families for their unwavering support, dedication and sacrifice.’’

The event featured a walk for families, who made the 6.5km walk across the causeway, followed by runners in the Causeway Classic.

Defence public affairs officer Gary Booth was pleased with the participation.

‘‘This year, I estimate 1500 people joined to walk or run in this event,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s fantastic, considering when the event started five years ago we had only 200 people attend.’’

Walkers and runners were rewarded with a carnival themed, family fun day at Garden Island that included a barbecue, rides, showbags and activities.

Defence public servants and their families were also invited to participate in the event.
