Navy notches up a big win

Sound Telegraph

The Royal Australian Navy claimed bragging rights over a combined side from the army and airforce in a special curtain-raiser to Sunday’s AFL match at Patersons Stadium.

Boasting several players who also line up for Warnbro Football Club, the navy side triumphed by 38 points, 8.10 (58) to 3.2 (20).

The match was part of special commemorations remembering the 645 men who were killed when the HMAS Sydney II was sunk off the West Australian coast in World War II.

The match was a precursor to the top-of-the-table clash between West Coast and Sydney.

The Swans ended the pattern of close recent results between the sides, prevailing 18.13 (121) to 10.9 (69).
