Neighbour thwarts theft

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

A Warnbro couple want to thank their neighbour for “saving the day” after he stalled burglars from getting away with their belongings.

The Coronata Drive home was broken into about 10.45am on Monday when a neighbour heard a commotion and went outside to investigate.

Homeowner Jay Wicks said his neighbour, who wished only to be known as Michael, heard glass break before seeing a woman and a man enter the home through a side window near the front door.

Michael called the police and then confronted the burglars when they attempted to drive off in a four-wheel-drive loaded with possessions from the home.

“Michael grabbed a stick and hit the driver in the arms so he couldn’t drive away,” Mr Wicks said.

“The driver then attacked him with a hammer but he kept hitting his wrist with the stick so the burglar couldn’t turn the key on.

“Eventually the offender started the car and just about pinned Michael against the fence just as the police arrived.”

Mr Wicks said he was grateful for the good Samaritan’s bravery.

“Not only has he stopped our burglary but maybe he has stopped further burglaries in the area from happening,” he said.

Mr Wicks’ partner Marianne Bennett was glad Michael did not get any injuries while stalling the burglars.

“Our stuff is not worth someone getting hurt but I am glad they got caught,” she said.

“The police do such a good job.”

Ms Bennett was relieved sentimental items would be returned.

At the time of going to press, Peel district crime team was still investigating. Two people were assisting with their inquiries.
