GABRIELLE JEFFERYSound Telegraph

Rockingham police have welcomed two new auxiliary officers to its ranks, allowing police officers to focus on frontline policing.

Starting their new role on June 20, new officers, Mick Leske and Brett Hogan, have past experience in security and management.

They will be fulfilling a custodial role involving collection of evidence and CCTV footage to support police investigations, along with escort duties, dealing with property issues and administrative duties.

Sgt Allan Jane said the new officers would help streamline policing.

‘‘The introduction o f auxiliary officers is a refreshing relief, allowing our staff the opportunity to respond to requests for assistance by more members of the public,’’ he said.

Mr Hogan said it was a good way to get a taste of policing.

‘‘This role is similar to being a police officer without having to be one. It will help me decide if I want to take the next step and become one later on,’’ he said.

Mr Leske agreed and added this new role was fulfilling a long-held dream.

‘‘I always wanted to be a police officer,’’ he said.

‘‘When I hit 40 I saw this advertisement and applied. It was great to get the job. I thought I might be too old.’’

Both men said they were settling in well in their new role and enjoying the different challenges the position brought.
