Obsessed with success

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

A combination of hard work, perseverance and a collective love of music has led to young band Big Girl’s Blouse turning heads in the Perth music scene.

The polished four-piece are very much the professional act — despite all but one member still younger than the age of 18 — and have their sights set on showbiz success.

Jay Hatch, 14, Colby Weir, 17, and Jack Wiltshire, 18, had been jamming together at Rockingham’s Castlerock Institute of Music for the past couple of years.

The recent addition of funny man Benny Nilen, 17, on bass and keyboards, completed the line-up and manager Paul Weir believes the quartet is bound for stardom.

“Big Girl’s Blouse is not like any other band — these boys are just obsessed with music,” he said.

“They are really pushing forward and delivering age-appropriate music. Girls love them.”

Vocalist Colby has the tousled look of a star frontman and a voice to match.

Drummer Wiltshire is just “crazy” on his instrument of choice, according to Mr Weir, and hopes to get his chance to deliver the type of world-class drum solos that caught his attention as a child.

After playing the Rockingham Easter Festival, Mandurah’s Crab Fest and a host of other local gigs, the boys were set to thrill audiences at North Fremantle’s Railway Hotel on Sunday.

“There isn’t much by way of gig opportunities for the boys in Rockingham,” Mr Weir said.

“I’m trying to get them into the pub scene so they can have a taste of professional gigs.”

Big Girl’s Blouse is working on their first EP and have appeared in their own music video.
