Open day raises $4000

Port Kennedy Veterinary Hospital has raised more than $4000 to help animal rescue organisations in the region at its annual open day.

The money was distributed to seven organisations in the area last week, including Paws for Diabetics assistance dogs, K9 Rescue and Mandurah Wildlife Rescue and Hospital.

Port Kennedy Veterinary Hospital manager Sheena Yaworski said the annual open day fundraiser was necessary to help support the vital organisations that looked after abandoned, sick and lost animals.

“If we didn’t have our rescue organisations we would be a mess,” she said.

“With the thousands of animals that are out there homeless or abused and not looked after properly, we would be overwhelmed and we’d have more sick animals out there.”

Mandurah Wildlife Rescue and Hospital volunteer Dot Terry-Boss said the donation would go a long way.

“It is absolutely wonderful that they are doing this for us, because at this time of the year and in this day and age it is very hard for us to get funding,” she said. “The people at Port Kennedy Vet are just wonderful because they are thinking of other people as well. The donation will go towards the feed for the wildlife we receive and running costs.”

K9 Rescue volunteer Billie Jo Whitehurst said their donation would help replace water bowls, dog pools and finish building projects.

The open day was held on December 1 and offered the community dog bathing, pony rides, face painting, balloon twisting and a sausage sizzle.
