Pair fundraise in tandem
A Rockingham couple are set to get on their bike as they embark on a 1000km adventure cycle to raise funds for cancer research.
Student teacher An Lens and partner Matthew Croft swung into action after receiving the news that Miss Lens’ father, Jan, who lives in her home country of Belgium, was suffering from cancer.
The pair have since built a custom-made tandem bicycle and plan to cycle to Geraldton and back, to show their support for Mr Lens, as well as Australian cancer sufferers.
“We’ve both always enjoyed cycling as a hobby and had been talking about going on a long ride,” Miss Lens said.
“It was so difficult not being able to be at home with him so we decided we would do our best to give him some moral support by raising money for charity.”
Mr Croft, whose sister-in-law Peta Croft also battled breast cancer recently, said the journey was “pretty adventurous” and the duo would not be able to carry much, but were pleased they had almost met their $2000 target.
“Basically, you sleep wherever you can — eat a muesli bar, drink a cup of tea and go to sleep,” he said.
“We did a five-day trial ride recently and found the most amazing places to stop over.”
“We were hoping to raise $2000, one dollar for each kilometre, per rider, and have made about $1200 so far, which is great.”
