A Baldivis woman has changed the lives of more than 100 Ugandan children, proving just how much difference one person can make.

Founder of the House of Hope Uganda (HHU) Wendy Pollock provides medical and educational programs for needy African children.

To continue the programs and raise funds, HHU is hosting a quiz night on April 23 at the Ocean Clipper Inn.

Doors will open at 6.30pm with cash prizes, raffles and a silent auction for $15 per person.

“We rely on donations and money raised through fundraising events held during the year,” Ms Pollock said.

“I first went to the House of Hope orphanage as a volunteer in 2010 — they had very limited facilities and were sharing a water hole with livestock.”

Soon after she created HHU, providing programs for children at the orphanage.

“We have just had our first five students complete their secondary studies and three are now applying for teachers college through our funding,” Ms Pollock said.

“We are also supporting 20 other students to attain a secondary education and have two students attending vocational colleges.”

The HHU also works with Empowering Disadvantaged Youth and Children (EDYAC) — an NGO in the Eastern Ugandan town of Tororo that was started by Dr Isaac Osire.

In conjunction with EDYAC, HHU set up The Healing House in 2012 to care for severely disabled and disadvantaged children, employing two nurses.

“We provide wound care before and after surgery and a nutritional boost program to give better quality of life to needy children,” Ms Pollock said.

Ms Pollock regularly visits Uganda and is always looking to improve conditions — installing solar lights and water wells on previous trips.
