Player shortage hits Rocky hard

Rockingham Rugby Union Club’s depth was sorely tested in last weekend’s 46-0 loss to Premier Grade rivals Associates at Lark Hill.

With the club missing a number of players across all grades, it was destined to be a difficult week and the extent of the player drought was evident in the Premier Grade, with seven players backing up for their second appearance of the day.

One player was even called upon to play in three matches.

Rockingham started well and kept Associates at bay early. However, a lack of possession forced the home side to rush attacks, resulting in several missed opportunities. The effort from the Rockingham’s beleaguered players was remarkable as those who had played earlier in the day stood up to be counted. The fresh players of Associates began to take control and eventually fatigue became an issue for the home side, who went down without troubling the scorers.

The reserves showed the kind of form that has seen them become serious finals contenders, despite also missing a number of key players.

However, in what was a very winnable contest, the visitors scored two late tries to run away with the match, leaving the home side with an unflattering 24-5 loss.

Third Grade were hampered by ill discipline in what has become a recurring issue for a side that only a few weeks ago seemed finals contenders.

A number of close losses have seen them drop down the table and the 22-7 loss at the weekend has made finals a difficult proposition.

Fourth Grade were another side strewn with players making a second appearance and the visitors took advantage of the tiring side with a 53-10 win.

Rockingham travel to Tompkins Park to face Palmyra next weekend.
