Point Peron gets a clean

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Volunteers armed with rubbish bags and gloves are set to cover Point Peron Peninsula next month on annual Clean Up Point Peron Day.

Coordinator Kathleen Schmah said the Point Peron Aquatic Youth and Family Association had been doing its part for Clean Up Australia Day for 14 years.

“Many people have beach houses in Point Peron and people come from all over the place — it is very dear to our hearts, it is another home,” she said.

“We used to have 20 to 30 volunteers and last year we had 100 — this year we are hoping to top 100.”

Ms Schmah said the amount of dumped rubbish around the peninsula had decreased over the years.

“Sadly, anytime you have an undeveloped area in an urban environment you get dumping, but it seems to me that the rubbish is decreasing,” she said.

“Maybe we’re finally getting on top of it and changing community behaviours.”

Ms Schmah urged everyone to get involved and spread the word.

Volunteers will meet at Memorial Drive on March 3 from 8.30am.

Volunteers need to bring water, shoes, sunnies, hats, sunscreen, gloves and reaching aids.
