Police call on public to ring in the changes

Rockingham residents are encouraged to make use of the new metropolitan policing model by contacting the local police teams and discussing suspicious activity to improve the region.

Rockingham Senior Sergeant Stuart Mearns said Sir Robert Peel, the founder of modern policing, was correct when he said police are the public and the public are the police, because policing could not function without the help of the public.

He said the reason for the change last September was because policing had become removed from the community, but wanted to return to supporting the residents with dedicated teams who knew the ins and outs of activity at the suburb level.

"Their role is to find solutions for the problems, just attending a job doesn't assess the long-term and sustainable solution," Sen. Sgt Mearns said.

"We are engaging with local government, and the departments of housing, child protection and education.

"The local police team officers will often know about the streets, locations and people involved, and they have to time to discuss the issues."

He urged residents to contact 000 if it was an emergency, but if they had information to discuss with officers to contact the team mobile numbers.
