Power to the pedals

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Trikes, pedal power and stamina are the words on students’ lips at Living Waters Lutheran College as the school prepares for the Australian International Pedal Prix.

For the 15th year in a row, the school will compete in the human-powered vehicle race held in Murray Bridge, South Australia, in September.

To help get the teams to the big race, the school is calling on the community for support through sponsorship.

College pedal prix team co-ordinator Kathy Suggate said students, staff and parents built or renovated recumbent trikes, which were raced around a street circuit.

“This event is a 24-hour endurance race and will involve over 220 vehicles and teams from all over Australia,” she said.

“This year we will be entering four human-powered vehicles that will be driven by students from our middle and senior schools. Students take it in turns to ride laps throughout the day and night.”

Student Nick Snashall, 16, who has taken part in the competition twice, said it was exhilarating to be on the track.

Fellow racer Lily Millard, 14, said she enjoyed the social aspect of the competition.

Mrs Suggate said the team was seeking varied donations, including money, specific vehicle parts, food and time to assist with training supervision and construction of the vehicles.

The competition will be held from September 19 to 21.

The school will also compete in the Australian HPV Super Series Pedal Prix in Busselton from August 16 to 17 for the first time.
