Pre-season clash ends in stalemate

Sound Telegraph

Rockingham City continued their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against a hard-working Port Kennedy side.

Recently appointed head coach Charlie Smith had to return to Scotland for a funeral, leaving Brian Kennedy, Mike Tetlow and captain Jason Bonsar to follow his instructions.

Both teams started brightly, passing the ball around sharply in midfield, with Rockingham goalkeeper Danny Snelling pulling off a great save. It was game on and some hefty tackles were flying in as both sets of players were keen to get one over on each-other.

City got their reward at the half-hour mark when Ryan Kennedy curled home a free-kick.

Port Kennedy, coached by Kris Donnell, came out in the second-half determined to get back into the game and did so through Craig Bineley.

He was allowed time and space to rifle a 30-yard strike past Snelling into the Rockingham net.

Both teams tried in vain to get the winner, but a 1-1 draw in the end was a fair result.

Earlier, City’s U18 State team beat Port Kennedy U18s 3-1. A young Rockingham team, coached by Mike Tetlow and Cameron Lord, dominated the game with 85 per cent possession.

Man of the match went to Ryan Haslett for his hat-trick.

City’s reserves downed Port Kennedy 6-2. Josh Senior scored a brace on his return to the club.

Rockingham play host to ECU Joondalup on Saturday.

The under 18s kick off at noon and the seniors at 2pm.
