The theme of the night will be black and white when the Rockingham Arts Centre open a ceramic and water colour exhibition next week.

A mixture of 20 professional and amateur artists will feature work in the joint venture between the Rockingham Ceramic Studio and the the Rockingham Water Colour Society.

Co-ordinator of the Ceramic Studio and artist Bec Thomas said the theme of black and white could be interpreted however people liked.

“I’m experimenting with mixing clays together and trying to get different variations of the colour of white and black,” she said.

The opening of the exhibition will be celebrated with a wine and cheese night on April 15 at 7pm, where those attending are asked to wear black and white.

Raili Pirhonen has been a ceramic artist and painter for the past 30 years and began after studying art at TAFE.

She has created a ceramic face of her late husband and some clocks for the exhibition.

“I’m experimenting with different ways of portraying black and white with some red which helps with contrast,” Ms Pirhonen said.

Most of the artwork will be for sale, the proceeds going to the artists.

The exhibition is free and will be open daily from 9am to 4pm until April 24.
