Program helps change habits

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

When her fitness levels started declining, Rockingham grandmother Beverly Harrison decided to swing in to action and enrol in a new initiative to change her lifestyle for good.

The Living Well for Life program from Perth South Coastal Medicare Local proved to be just what the doctor ordered.

Mrs Harrison quickly shifted excess weight, thanks to undergoing two-hour education and exercise sessions.

Mrs Harrison received one-to-one consultations with the group’s exercise psychologist Kate Gregory and dietitian Deneka Pilmoor receiving the support she needed to shed those extra pounds.

“As the girls say, you can start of gradually and take the opportunity to use the exercise equipment that’s available to you,” she said.

“You can get up and down on the steps at home instead of going to the gym and you’re not locked in to somebody else’s program,” she said.

“Now I’ve done things I didn’t think of doing and it’s made me realise I can stretch myself a lot further than I thought.”

Miss Pilmoor said reducing portion size was the first thing to look at when embarking on a change of lifestyle.

She said the program was about changing habits and sticking to them, rather than just weight loss.
