There is still time to register for the City of Rockingham Festival of New Talent.

The event, run by Street Hassle Events, is open to junior and senior musicians, with categories for original and cover artists.

Festival co-ordinator Michelle Mrzyglocki said FoNT was a talent quest which helped build Rockingham's musical community.

"We encourage every single contestant to make sure they meet someone new, connect with them, get together and have a jam session, support each other's artistic efforts and understand they are all in the same situation," she said.

"The unfortunate aspect of a talent quest is that there is an eventual winner.

"The difference with City of Rockingham FoNT is that Street Hassle Events books many events throughout the year and, if we see an act we like, we can offer future opportunities regardless of how they place in the competition."

Port Kennedy musician Aaron Gwynaire is returning to the competition with girlfriend and fellow songwriter Alysha Magnum.

He placed third in last year's senior division and hoped teaming with Magnum would provide a new edge to take the title in the senior's original category. "I've had continued support from the judges ever since last year's event," Gwynaire said.

"I've developed a lot more since last year and as a duo we work really well together."

Magnum, who took up singing when love blossomed with Gwynaire three-and-a-half years ago, said FoNT would be their debut performance playing acoustic guitar and harmonising together.

"It's a good opportunity for me to step outside my comfort zone and gain some personal development," she said.

"I'm hoping to develop my music more and this will be a great platform for that."

Mrzyglocki said stage experience was not vital.

"Whether it be developing your performance skill set as a 'newbie' on stage or promoting your gig-ready show, I really don't see a downside," she said.

"It is your best music lesson of the year."

FoNT heats will be held at 1pm each Sunday throughout October.

Heat 1 is on October 5 at Baldivis Town Square, heat 2 on October 12 at Warnbro Shopping Centre, Heat 3 on October 19 at Rockingham Shopping Centre and the final will be on October 26 at the Secret Harbour Spring Market Fair.
