Racing: Double cup hopes for trainer, owners
Karnup trainer Grant Williams and leading owners Bob and Sandra Peters appear poised to continue their winning ways when stablemate s Significant and Battle Emblem line up in tomorrow afternoon’s $130,000 Bunbury Cup (2200m).
Significant, a daughter of Flying Spur, has struck career best form with wins at her past three appearances, including an impressive performance in the AHA Cup a fortnight back when she held at bay the fast-finishing Peg’s Pride.
Battle Emblem, a seven-year-old son of Second Empire, was a close-up fourth and has stormed into consideration after running home powerfully from near last at the turn.
It was his first run since defeating Lie In Wait at Belmont Park last August, but he did enter the race on the back of four solid trial hit-outs.
‘‘I keep making a case for Battle Emblem and he will be hard to beat in the cup, but you can’t dismiss what Significant has done,’’ Williams said.
‘‘She keeps stepping up to the plate and keeps winning and that’s all you can do.
‘‘Her run in the AHA Cup was harder than what it appeared and she had to do a bit to get her spot.’’
William Pike, who will take the ride, won the Bunbury Cup aboard the Adam Durrant trained Lords Ransom in 2008.
Williams also has high hopes Forever Special can score backto- back victories after a solid maiden win at Pinjarra.
The Catbird filly was making her long-awaited debut after trialling last June, and didn’t disappoint, with a comfortable victory over Andraczke.
In-form stablemate Moonbound has returned to racing in impressive fashion and has not been beaten in two starts back.
The daughter of Catbird looks well placed to make it win number three, despite drawing a wide alley.
‘‘The way she went last start, it shouldn’t be too much of a concern,’’ he said.
‘‘She got back and attacked the line strongly and the extra distance of the mile will suit.’’
