Kwinana residents who want a public poll on the city’s proposed amalgamation with Cockburn have been asked to register their desire to vote on the issue.

At least 250 people need to register with the council by December 5 for a poll to go ahead.

The poll would determine if the controversial amalgamation proposal is scrapped or if it goes ahead.

Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said she believed there would be many in the community passionately opposed to the Kwinana-Cockburn amalgamation.

“The council certainly encourages the Kwinana community to think seriously about their future and whether they would like to exercise their right to a poll,” she said.

“Kwinana electors are fortunate, more so than most in Perth, to have retained this basic democratic right so it is important not to throw that right away.”

The City of Kwinana has asked for people to submit all forms and signatures be provided by November 28, to leave enough time to collate all information.

Individual electors can visit either the city’s administration office or the Kwinana Public Library and sign the official form.

From these locations people can also take away additional forms and collect signatures of their own, but these should be returned to the city for processing.
