Residents want City action on deadly road

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

More than 100 Georgetown Drive residents have signed a petition calling on the City of Rockingham to investigate if anything could be done to improve the safety of the street.

Rockingham MLA Mark McGowan presented the petition to City councillors Deb Hamblin and Joy Stewart on Friday after speaking to residents about their concerns.

“There’s been too many accidents on Georgetown Drive where cars have hit houses, including a fatality,” he said.

“The council’s done some remedial works on this street, but they don’t appear to have worked as effectively as they could, so residents are asking for more to be done.”

Mr McGowan said residents on the street, which connects Waikiki and Malibu roads in Safety Bay, were scared about potential future incidents.

“This street seems to be a cut through,” he said.

“Because of that, some people seem to think because it’s off the main road it’s easier to avoid police, so they are behaving badly on this road.

“All we’re asking for is for another look at it.

“It just seems to me that consecutive houses have been hit by cars in the last couple of years involving someone being killed in their bed, there’s something wrong.

“Something has to happen because you can’t have people afraid to sleep in their beds.”

Cr Hamblin said she had spoken to City officers and she had been informed the City and Main Roads had given the road’s design the all clear.

“But council is happy to look at a broader area down to Waikiki and including Acapulco rather than just looking at Georgetown,” she said.
