Secret Harbour resident Silke Steuxner will feature her handmade quilts in a quilting challenge this week.

The Craft and Quilt Fair begins today at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, running until Sunday, and will feature a range of exhibitions, hands-on activities, guest artists, demonstrations and workshops.

Steuxner will be presenting two quilts for the challenge.

The first piece, titled Smokey, was created for her 12-year-old Siberian Husky.

“He looks like a wolf and I love him very much, so what a great way to create a quilt and lasting memory of him,” she said.

“The quilt is made with cotton fabrics and is mainly done with thread art where the outline was stitched with my domestic machine and then coloured in with pencils.”

Her second piece, titled Fragile Balance, was a way for Steuxner to share her love of the planet.

“The message in the quilt is that it’s in our hands to look after our planet,” she said.

“The wave represents fragility and shows us that everything can be wiped out if we don’t take care of our land.”
